Finance & Banking Format Converter
This free number to words converter turns any figure into clear, correct English text. Type an amount into the calculator above, choose a currency and format, and copy the spelled-out result with one tap. It handles whole numbers, decimals, negatives, and large values from a single hundred up to the trillions, so you can convert numbers to words for invoices, checks, contracts, and homework in seconds.
English groups digits in threes, and each group is read with its own place name. Starting from the right, the groups are thousands, millions, billions, and trillions. To convert a number to words, read each three-digit group and add the name of its group as you move to the left.
Take 1,000,000 as a worked example. The digits split into three groups: 1 | 000 | 000. The leftmost group is 1 in the millions place, so the number is written as one million. In the same way 2,500 becomes two thousand five hundred, and 1,250,000 becomes one million two hundred fifty thousand.
The converter does this automatically and also fixes hyphenation (twenty-one), spacing, and letter case for you. Pick Title Case for headings, UPPERCASE for legal lines, or sentence case for ordinary writing.
Two-digit numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen, while numbers below twenty and the round tens are single words. Decimals can be read two ways: as a fraction over one hundred for money (for example, three and 50/100) or spoken figure by figure (three point five). Negative values simply add the word minus in front, so -7 becomes minus seven. The calculator applies every one of these rules for you, which removes the guesswork when you convert a number by hand.
The table below lists the main place values used when writing numbers as words in the international system. Each step to the right adds three zeros, from one hundred up to one trillion.
| Number | Digits | In words |
|---|---|---|
| Hundred | 100 | one hundred |
| Thousand | 1,000 | one thousand |
| Ten thousand | 10,000 | ten thousand |
| Hundred thousand | 100,000 | one hundred thousand |
| Million | 1,000,000 | one million |
| Billion | 1,000,000,000 | one billion |
| Trillion | 1,000,000,000,000 | one trillion |
Readers in India, the UAE, and the Philippines often use the South Asian system, which groups digits differently after the thousands. One hundred thousand is written as one lakh, and ten million is written as one crore. Switch the Number system selector in the calculator to Indian to convert numbers to words as lakh and crore.
| Digits | International | Indian |
|---|---|---|
| 100,000 | one hundred thousand | one lakh |
| 1,000,000 | one million | ten lakh |
| 10,000,000 | ten million | one crore |
Writing an amount in words on a check or cheque protects the payment from tampering and removes any doubt about the figure. The words are the legal amount; the digits are only a convenience.
The final line reads One thousand two hundred fifty and 00/100 dollars. Turn the Currency name and Cents options on or off in Settings to match your document.
Spelling out figures is a daily task in many fields, and this converter is built to make it fast and error-free. Accountants and bookkeepers write amounts in words on payment orders, invoices, and expense reports. Lawyers and notaries spell out sums in purchase agreements, loan contracts, and powers of attorney, where the written amount carries legal weight. Business owners use it for receipts and waybills, and banks rely on it whenever a check is issued.
Beyond finance, students and teachers use a number to words calculator for homework, spelling practice, and worksheets, while writers and editors spell out numbers to follow style guides. Because the tool covers currencies, decimals, and both the international and Indian systems, the same converter serves an accountant in London, a shop owner in Dubai, and a student in Mumbai without any extra setup.
Words remove any doubt about a figure and cannot be altered as easily as digits on documents.
The written amount is the legally binding value and protects the payment from tampering.
